If you’re a Canadian citizen looking for healthcare out of town, you’re not alone. Why? According to surveys, Canadians are looking for increased access to care, quality, and convenience.

“69% of Canadians are willing to travel outside of their local area to undergo a medical test, procedure, or doctor-recommended treatment.”

Why Wait?

CBC News Canada has reported that wait times for Canadian patients are growing longer.

Results from a 2012 study by the Wait Time Alliance showed a worsening of performance with regard to patients receiving care within the pan-Canadian benchmarks set by the government. Although some provinces have shown improvement, the overall results point toward lengthier waits for Canadians.

Meanwhile, the Fraser Institute has reported that wait times for Canadians needing surgery are the worst they have been in 18 years.

They found that the median wait time is 19 weeks between the referral from a general practitioner and the start of elective treatment is 19 weeks.

“At 104% longer than it was in 1993, this is the longest total wait time recorded since the Fraser Institute began measuring wait times in Canada,” the report says.
