Tips before adding Yoga into your rehabilitation program after a Spinal Fusion Surgery

January 24, 2020Solomon Kamson, MD, PHDFUSION, Spinal Fusion Surgery, Spine Surgery, Uncategorized

If you or someone you know is recovering from your spinal fusion surgery, you may want to look into adding or having them add yoga into the recovery plan.  Doctors often recommend yoga to their patients after a spinal fusion surgery.  Before just adding yoga for rehabilitation, read these tips below.

TIPS

First, be sure to get approval from your doctor, it’s crucial that you have the thumbs up from a doctor to avoid damaging the benefits from your spinal fusion surgery.

Ask your doctor for a list of restrictions in regards to yoga that you need so you can communicate this to a yoga instructor.

Find an yoga instructor that is experienced in yoga therapeutics and will help you with your rehabilitation program after spinal fusion surgery.

Find a yoga instructor who is experienced with working with spinal fusion surgery patients.

Avoid large (30 or more people) yoga classes.  If possible, schedule a one on one session with a knowledgeable yoga instructor that is familiar with the appropriate yoga poses after someone has had spinal fusion surgery.

Do not include any yoga poses that include bending or twisting.

Try to hold the yoga  poses for at least 30 seconds, this will allow your muscles to adapt and be more comfortable with the movements.

Listen to your body and take it slow.  Don’t push your body if there is pain or discomfort while you are in a yoga pose.  Also be sure you feel safe and stable while in the yoga pose.  You may want to ask for modifications for some poses until you are able to do more advanced poses.

Use Yoga props, including a yoga mat, yoga blocks, straps and bolsters.  These yoga props will provide additional support and help you ease into each pose.

Keep yoga as part of your active life style after you fully recover from your spinal fusion surgery.  Yoga promotes a healthy spine and eases back pain.
